What to See & Do in Tokyo

Tokyo has a vast array of sights, but the first items on the agenda of most visitors are the temples of Asakusa, the gardens of the Imperial Palace and the Meiji Shrine.

Tokyo has many commercial centres for shopping, eating and simply wandering around for experiencing the modern Japanese urban phenomenon. Each of these areas have unique characteristics, such as dazzling Shinjuku, youthful Shibuya and upmarket Ginza. These areas are bustling throughout the day, but they really come into life in the evenings.

There are many places from where to enjoy stunning views of Tokyo. The most famous ones are Tokyo Tower, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building, the World Trade Center Building, Roppongi Hills, and even Rainbow Bridge. Some charge an admission free, but a couple of them are also free.

The city is dotted with museums, large and small, which center on every possible interest from pens to antique clocks to traditional and modern arts. Many of the largest museums are located around Ueno.

The following is a list of other fun things that can be done in and around Tokyo:

  1. Eat a sushi breakfast at the Tsukiji Fish Market.
  2. Take a boat ride on the Sumida River from Asakusa.
  3. Visit in the dazzling neon jungle outside major train stations (Shibuya and Shinjuku) in the evenings.
  4. Go to an amusement park such as Tokyo Disney Resort and Tokyo Dome City.
  5. Check out the hip and young crowd at Harajuku's Takeshita Street or the more grown up Omotesando.
  6. Take the Yurikamome elevated train across the bay bridge to Odaiba district, and go on the giant ferris wheel.

  8. Take a stroll through the Imperial Palace's East Gardens.
  9. Have a picnic in a park during the cherry blossom (Sakura) in April.
